New Paint formulations offer less VOCs

paint cansArchitectural paints are generally split into two categories: water-based and oil-based.  Oil-based paints are sometimes referred to as solvent-based and water-based paints as latex paints. VOCs are in all oil-based paints as solvents. Many latex paints also contain some VOC as part of their paint chemistry.  VOCs are chemicals that easily evaporate during the application and curing of paints. Once paint is applied, the carrier evaporates leaving behind a solid coating.

Volatile Organic Compounds are toxic chemicals that easily evaporate into the air and accumulate in the indoor environment where you breathe. VOCs can also escape into the atmosphere and form smog. When inhaled, these chemicals can cause a variety of health problems like nausea, dizziness, irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, and more serious illnesses including heart, lung or kidney damage and even cancer. Many people are particularly susceptible to these effects, including those with weakened immune systems or chemical sensitivities, asthmatics, young children and the elderly.

Newer formulations contain more paint solids and less VOCs, and there is a shift away from oil-based to water-based or latex paints. Because they do not use solvents as the primary carrier, latex paints emit far fewer VOCs upon application. Latex paint requires only water, not toxic solvents for the cleaning of tools and equipment.  Lastly, fungicides and preservatives are added to latex paints to combat mildew.

Purchasing paints with no or low-VOC will result in improved air quality both indoors and out.  A big benefit for many companies that choose no or low-VOC paint is the reduction in paint related odors and associated complaints from building occupants and visitors.  This results in less down time for businesses and reduced liabilities.

Walt

Just a note to thank you for accepting and doing a wonderful job of painting the two houses and especially an old barn.

For the past 3 years, I knew painting needed to be done, but the thought of contacting contractors and getting estimates and choosing the right company, I became like Scarlett O'Hara—"I'll think about that tomorrow".

So it was a blessing when Darrell recommended you and your company. I didn't have to do all that background work; and all of a sudden, the hardest part for me was choosing colors. What I had dreaded for three years turned out to be a wonderful experience.

You have a great crew! Jerry and Gonzalo and the two assistants (Adam and Sam?) not only did a super job of painting but were friendly, helpful, careful with the landscape, and left everything neat and clean at the end of each day.

It was a pleasure meeting you and especially Mr. Gunner. Thank you also for offering me fans for the heatwave. That was very thoughtful and kind of you and much appreciated. I made it through in pretty good shape. Out early each morning to water flower beds and garden and then spend the rest of the day in the basement. Hopefully you and the guys also did not have any problems the past 4 days.

Best wishes for the future. Should you and, of course, Mr. Gunner ever be out in the North Plains area in the future, don't hesitate to stop in and say hello. Otherwise, I'll "keep track" of you through Darrell. Thanks again.

Description Of Work:
The entire interior of my home was painted including ceilings, wainscoting & all baseboard moldings. The entire staff at Cut No Corners Painting was extremely professional & executed a high quality of work. Cut No Corners was fantastic to work with. At the beginning of the job, I decided to have all the baseboards painted. Cut No Corners accommodated this request at a fair price & squeezed in this extra work to meet my tight time-line. If you are looking for a professional, high quality, trustworthy company, hire Cut No Corners!

Description Of Work:
They removed the old wallpaper in a bathroom, which proved to be more work than expected (apparently the walls were not primed before the wallpaper was installed). Then they created a smooth surface on the walls, applied primer and textured the walls, to match the other walls in our home. Then they painted the walls and ceiling with the Devine Paint we had chosen. The finished room is perfect.

"They are real professionals. The bumps in the road that were encountered (clogged drain; chipped woodwork) were quickly and easily remedied, and the project continued as planned."

Description Of Work:
Cut No Corners painted the interior of our home. Walt responded right away to my initial call and scheduled a free estimate at my convenience that week. He then did the paint job 2 weeks after the estimate. The cost was the same as the estimate, minus the 10% Angie’s List discount. His crew was very courteous and tidy. When the job was all done, the house looked great (the paint job and the clean up).

Member Comments:
"Excellent- would highly recommend. Crew very friendly, professional and polite. Came right on time every day and left the house clean each day. Moved furniture for free."
